One of the most effective service returns—and least used at lower levels—is deep and down the middle, into what I call the Magic Box. It’s a great way to rush the server, push him back in the court, nullify service angles, and get control of points.
Here is how the game works. Define the Magic Box target area on the court with strips or other markers or even chalk. It’s should be roughly 8 feet by 8 feet.
Play games to 7 or 11 points. One player serves. The returner must hit the magic box or he loses the point. If he hits the box with his return, the players play out the point. Continue til one player wins the game and then switch servers. The game gives you an objective way to measure the consistency and effectiveness of your deep down the middle returns and how to build points off them in a way that will translate into better returns in match play.
