  • Beware ATP Stats

    I'd take any stats you see from the ATP & WTA with more than the usual dollop of salt these days.
    Something is wrong with however it compiles them.
    Three examples from this weekend.

    { Some might remember from several years back how we found that the French Open Infosys system was recording serve speed from any rally as the speed of the winning shot, whether it was a groundstroke a volley or whatever. That, by the way, was never fixed. }

    1 of 3 Per the ATP mobile app, Paolini has beaten Coco many times in a row. But it must have been an unusually tough qualifying round in Stuttgart because she had to beat Coco four times just to get into the main draw.

    2 of 3 Per ATP Web site, Carlos (column on your right) only hit one single volley in the entire men's final and that wasn't a winner -- even though match point was a winning volley. But it gets worse.

    3 of 3 Per "Courtvision" the Rome final didn't have many different kinds of strokes. Carlos didn't hit a single drop shot, and neither even attempted an overhead and so on.
