Sinner On Verge of Tour First

As the ATP Tour year approaches a close, Sinner is in sight of a tour first -- No player has ever led the tour at year end in both percentage of service games won and percentage of return games won since they started tracking those stats in 1994. Here's where he is today, per ATP:

    Player % Service Games Won
    1) Jannik Sinner 91.45%
    2) Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 89.29%
    3) Taylor Fritz 89.28%
    4) Reilly Opelka 89.03%
    5) Novak Djokovic 88.46%

    Player % Return Games Won
    1) Jannik Sinner 32.68%
    2) Carlos Alcaraz 32.55%
    3) Alex de Minaur 30.14%
    4) Sebastian Baez 28.72%
    5) Francisco Cerundolo 28.68%

I can't think of another player besides Sinner who has ever had the best forehand and the best backhand on the Tour. Taking the ball on the rise off both sides. The ultimate time thief.

By winning Paris, Jannik Sinner will leap past Carlos Alcatraz on Monday as the two play see-saw with the number one ranking.

BUT, Carlos still has a 1,000 point point lead in the YTD or "Race" rankings. The year end number one rank, could come down to Turin's finals, if SIncaraz makes it there.
Without doing the match, I suspect it is possible Sinner could win Turin and still finish number two for the year, depending on Round Robin points won.

I speculated that Carlos Alvaraz could hold onto his number one ranking even if Jannik Sinner won the ATP Tour finals.
Fortunately, somebody else did the grunt work for us. From The Athletic.

Sinner will revert to number two when points from Turin roll off his rolling total. Then:

"Because of the rankings points structure at the ATP Tour Finals, Alcaraz will end the year as world No. 1 if he goes undefeated in his three round-robin matches, or if he reaches the final with at least one round-robin win, no matter what Sinner does.

“It was such an intense final here, we both knew what's on the line,” Sinner said in his on-court interview with Tennis TV.

“It has been an amazing year no matter what comes now in Turin,” he said.

It is a fitting conclusion for a season in which Sinner and Alcaraz have asserted their total dominance over the rest of the field. They split the four Grand Slams, and have opened up a near-5,700 point gap between them and No. 3 Alexander Zverev. The ATP Tour Finals begins November 9."

If Carlos beats Musetti on Friday, he holds on to the year end number one regardless.
