  • Athens ATP 250

    Fans of one-handed backhands, and I know there are many of us here, can celebrate Stan Wawrinka meeting Lorenzo Musetti in Athens.

    Stan was two points from victory, but Lorenzo came back 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Musetti can qualify for the year-end ATP Tour Finals in Turin by winning in Athens, otherwise FAA is in.

    Separately, some may wonder why Djokovic skipped Paris but is playing in Greece. Novak has moved his family to Greece saying he wanted a "calm atmosphere" for his children. Earlier reports claimed the leading party in Serbia criticized Djokovic for being supportive of student demonstrations calling for the government to step down, leading to the move.

    Anyway, Djokovic next meets Borges.

    Lorenzo Musetti’s hopes of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals hung by a thread on Wednesday, but the Italian rose to the occasion to continue his quest for a Turin debut.

    Musetti meets Korda in one semi, Djokovic vs winner of Giron vs Hanfmann in the other.

    Again, Musetti must win the event to become the 8th and final entrant in Turin, otherwise FAA quaiifies.

      Novak reaches his 199th semi final. Jimmy Connors has reached far more. One forgets just how consistently good he was throughout his long career. Jimmy’s is a remarkable statistic when you consider the field he was playing in: Borg, McEnroe, Lendl, Nastase, Becker, Cash... to name a few.

      MOST CAREER SEMIFINALS:

      239: Jimmy Connors
      211: Roger Federer
      199: Novak Djokovic
      189: Rafael Nadal
      178: Ivan Lendl

        Watched him play at "The Cow Palace" near San Francisco, back when Northern California was an important part of pro tennis { back before IMG and SAP killed historically important tournaments hee. }

        Remember his "backfire" overhead?

          Djokovic narrowly defeats Lorenzo Musetti -- which puts FAA in the Turin ATP Tour Finals.

          H2H now 9-1 for the "Greek" { Is he Greek now that he fled Serbia with his family?}

            I heard Novak suggested Lorenzo should ‘'come back and try again when I'm 40’'.

              Oh, ouch. Lorenzo isn't moving forward in this matchup. He was up 2 sets to love on Djoko on the French Open when Lorenzo was in high school.
              I always remember that because Lorenzo had to rush from the stadium to fly back to Italy to take oral exams for his high school diploma.
