Over the course of a pro career that lasted from the ’70s into the ’80s, Rick Meyer was a solid Top 100 player. His serve was clocked at 130 miles per hour—at a time when 100 mph was considered tremendously fast.
Rick defeated many Grand Slam champions, including world No. 1 Ilie Nastase, Adriano Panatta, Brian Gottfried, Raul Ramirez, Johan Kriek, and others. At the 1980 US Open, Rick advanced to the third round, extending eventual champion John McEnroe to four sets. In 1983, he reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open.
A highly versatile doubles player, Rick’s partners included Hall of Famers Ivan Lendl, John Newcombe, and Frew McMillan, as well as Vitas Gerulaitis and Anand Amritraj.
