Lew Hoad v Pancho Gonzalez 1964

19:30 min B&W video. Looks and sounds like they're playing on wood, which combined with using those teeny 20 sq in wood rackets, makes it a serving contest.
Even if they did have to serve with both feet on the ground <g>

I recall Pancho saying Hoad was his pick for GOAT, not-so-modestly saying Hoad was the only player that could beat him straight up, best game vs best game.

While the ball speed is nothing like today, the pace of play is relatively blazing; these two could play a game in the time it takes Djokovic to bounce the ball. No tiebreaks. No TV commercial breaks. Just tennis.

Nice find. Seems like the fastest court on earth...literally rocketing off what looks like shiny wood. Hoad is as casual as ever and not even bothering to run in behind his serve as quick as he might. Most clips you see of him he's like that...quite lazy.

Both players have lovely service motions.

I played at Queens Club once on the indoor courts they had some 40-odd years ago. They were ridiculously quick, almost unplayably so.

    Thanks for sharing.
