  • Back Swing in the serve

Hi, i would like to know if the common club player can achieve the external shoulder as we can see in the article of Brian Gordon? Do you need to have a
very supple soulder joint? Does anybody have a trick to start this movement?

    Thank You !
    Chris

    Chris-

A couple of observations - lack or loss of external range will limit the quantity of some of the back swing/upward swing shoulder motions - but it is not only the quantity that counts - if fact, I find quality is just as important.

By quality I mean that at the limit of external range (wherever that is), that good racquet speed has been developed and that the internal rotators are active. To achieve this, focus on the shoulder force from trunk rotation and leg push to drive the external shoulder rotation (see back swing #2).

Finally, lack or loss of shoulder range of external rotation is not terminal, but rather can be altered with static and dynamic stretching routines - about this I speak from considerable experience - good luck - Brian
