  • Match Rewind: J. McEnroe/P. Fleming vs. Y. Noah/H.Leconte...1982 Davis Cup

Such a great example how the game of tennis has been "ENGINEERED" beyond all recognition. How quickly we forget and if you don't know history...you are doomed to repeat it. In this now obscure match in tennis history the truth is preserved in this video. What a spectacular display of skill and cunning by John McEnroe in particular. Yannik Noah, Henri Leconte and Peter Fleming were all tremendous athletes but John is in a class of his own on this court. On this day. He's a wizard with that little tiny Dunlop wooden tennis racquet. The volleying is dizzying. It's amazing how he can actually drive his volleys with such a short stroke. Noah and Leconte are both using mid-sized racquets while McEnroe and Fleming are using standard issue wooden models. They have handicapped themselves yet they prevail rather convincingly.

Where has the doubles gone in tennis? Modern doubles? Look at Fleming and McEnroe work together. In tandem, as if attached to each other with bungy cords. Never out of position and always there to cover for the other. The use of the middle of the court is a phenomena long forgotten in doubles strategy. Gee...no crazy formations. No secret signalling to each other. These guys know where the other is going to be at all times. I remember playing the doubles. We always played doubles and singles in the tournaments. The local venues. What a weekend that would make...five rounds of singles and four of doubles if you were in the finals.

McEnroe played doubles all of the time. How many times did he have to drag himself on the court after being exhausted from playing both in Grand Slams. Modern players can't be bothered. More on that later. This tennis at its inflection point. 1982. Things are changing and rapidly.

Modern tennis has surely rewritten all that used to be tennis. Engineered it beyond recognition. Doubles is another stark example. Watching John McEnroe and Peter Fleming dismantle a formidable team such as Yannik Noah and Henri Leconte is eye opening to the skills that these players possessed compared to the one-trick ponies playing the modern game. Imagine any player in the modern game on the court with these guys playing with a wooden racquet and if you have any imagination at all you will see and understand my point. Modern tennis is FAKE tennis.

Modern doubles is a different game by comparison. I don't recognize the game at all. It wouldn't surprise me to see all four players in the backcourt playing without advancing to the net. Alexander Bublik is a player who I refer to as an idiot savant. The guy is rather talented but also has a touch of the Nick Kyrgios Syndrome in him. A loose canon. He rarely can be taken seriously on the tennis court and then before you know it he has defeated Jannik Sinner in a tournament. But basically...he's an idiot most of the time. Any genius around his personna is rarely caught of glimpse of. Be that as it may...the idiot savant has touched on something rather intriguing. Here he is lambasting the modern doubles players. Any comments? I have a couple that I will share soon.

Alexander Bublik is never one to bite his tongue, and the Kazakh star has once again made headlines at the US Open. Fresh off a dramatic five-set win over Tommy Paul — 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1...
