Sinner was at his time thief best in taking out Carlos in 2 sets. Sinner's serve impact is reminding me of Fed. I always have felt Fed was the best time thief ever, but Sinner may even take away more time.

As Bud Collins once said at Wimbledon, "Holy Cow. Tennis broke out."
After days of desultory matches, Sinner took it to Carlos and don't tell either this match didn't matter.
One return winner stood out - Sinner well inside the baseline, doubles ally to cut off an Alcaraz slice serve to smack and outright, Carlos-didn't-even-move return.

Some discussion of tactics might be of interest.

During a miked up session with Laura Robson [ strapped with a wearable camera, no less ] where the former player tried to touch, let alone return, Jannik's serve -- was some discussion of tactics.

First, they agreed that the court is "unusual" delivering huge bounce. Sinner smiled and evaded a question on live TV of how he was going to play Carlos, but he did, in fact, attack Carlos 'return with wicked kick serves that gave the Spaniard a lot of trouble.

But, asked if he did that in the semifinal where Sinner steamrolled Djokovic, Sinner said "No, I hit straight through". That could have meant either "through the court" or "through Djokovic" and either would be correct.

So, the tactics were to overpower Djokovic and attack Alcaraz with high kick.

This whole spectacle is funny to me. Tsitsipas and Zverev both play 1 hour for 1.5 million. Novak decides to quit his match after losing the 1st set tiebreaker to Fritz. I am thinking, minority opinion I am sure, Novak would have maybe powered through if he had won thar set. There were only 2 good matches, Alcaraz ve Fritz, and of course the Final was great, the 2 best players in the world to me played the match and really wanted to win. Saudi money can do what it wishes, no doubt. I have no problem with the whole stupidity. I read this "tournament" sold out in 6 minutes. Carry on.

I wasn’t impressed with the tournament. Other than money, the event came across as meaningless to the players. The end of match handshake in the final said it all; both players grinning ear-to-ear as if they had just played a friendly…albeit with a big purse neither player needs by now.

I was impressed with Sinner, though. He hit around five shots that Carlos didn’t even move for…left him in his tracks. Not sure any other player on the tour can claim to have done that to Carlos.

Stotty, you and I were on the same page. Not impressed. But be that as it may, the money dictates. And because of that, at least right now, the WTA is good as long as the woke stuff(ATP supplements) continue.

Events I saw were pretty bad - until the final, which as you noted had some exceptional play.

That match reinforced how much impact the court surface/ environment used to have on matches, back before the TDs homogenized everything.

Sinner said before hand that the court was unusual because of its high bounce, and he clearly made that his tool for attacking Carlos. Wicked topspin kickers.

Quite different shots than Sinner used to brow beat Djokovic.

P.S. I'd take the claim of having sold out the tickets with buckets of sand, which are easy to fill in Saudi.
