  • Tsonga says Big Two Haven't Proved They Equal the Big Three

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga shoots down comparisons of SIncaraz to the Big 3.

    Roughly paraphrasing a machine translation: "What I would like is to see them face Del Potro in the third round, Murray in the round of 8, Djokvoic in the fourth, Fed in the second, and Nadal in the final. They are only two -- for now."

    I was thinking about Tsonga's comments comparing the field the Big 3 had to navigate with the much greater distance between Sincarraz and the rest when I read a criticism that the Big 3 "never played all those people in one tournament". Well, yes but that misses the point.

    I remember Fed losing his first ever match vs Andy Murray. Fed had won Toronto the afternoon before and came perhaps literally from a red eye flight to Cincinnati for an early morning, first round match vs Andy Murray. Fed lost in the only match I can think of where Fed didn't really try. { And what Tour Director schedules the Rogers Cup winner for the first thing the next morning? Insane. }

    A year or three later in 2015, Fed had to beat Anderson, Lopez, Murray, and Djokovic to win Cinci.

    In 2012, Fed had to beat Mardy Fish, Stan Wawrinka and Djokovic again to win Cinci.

    So, yeah, not many hamburger helpers in the draws of Masters 1000 then.
