  • The Skippers: Mac and Pete

One of the things I loved about watching Sampras was his movement. Though Federer might move more gracefully, almost as if he was performing ballet, Sampras truly seemed to move like a gazelle! An image that sticks out in my mind when thinking about Sampras's movement was the sort of skip-split-step he used when coming into net. It looked really cool, but honestly, I don't know what's going on there with that. I was checking out some footage of Mac and he does the same thing. Does anyone know what's going on there? Bob Hansen? Michael Friedman? Check it out:

Forgive me if I'm wrong, I'm certainly not an expert in the game.

But it seems like the image of "skipping" is simply the effort to hop while moving forward. Essentially, they start to move forward, and sort of splitstep/hop while still moving their legs. They get their splitstep that allows them to react and change directions easily, but still retain most of their forward momentum this way
