I thought it all started with Monica Seles and Bolletieri. Wimbledon officials were asked to do something about it.

Here is an article on grunting...

      grunting at Key Biscayne

I have not yet seen the final. I record the 100s of hours of TV from those tournaments on my DVR, and it takes me so long to catch up. But I will look forward to the women's Miami final, thanks to your comments, Don Budge.

I have gotten so used to the grunting that I am not appalled anymore. However, I would support a new pro-tennis rule to lower the decibels of grunting. I do not think that it helps players hit harder. It might help them become more aware of impact point of racket with ball. Who know?

The German player Petkovic shouts "Ouw" after she hits the ball, so that it probably distracts her opponent, and also leads spectators to believe that a linesperson has made an out call. Such a situation is not good for the sport. Players of course could easily modify their grunting behavior, if only authorities would either legislate a rule about it, or begin to judge that a loud grunt is a purposeful distraction & therefore a loss of point.

I love your stories, Don Budge. I think I saw that one player, also. Thanks.
