Prize money at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open will increase to US$5,030,402 following the ATP Board of Directors’ approval of Indian Wells’ proposed prize money distribution for 2013, the ATP announced on Wednesday.

The approval of the prize money distribution leads to more than US$860,000 of additional prize money on offer across the men’s singles and doubles events for 2013. By virtue of the approval, every player in the men’s singles and doubles events will earn above the minimum prize money levels per round established for the tournament.

“Prize money increases are always a positive reflection on the state of our sport, however there are a number of safeguards in place in accordance with ATP rules to ensure that prize money being invested into the sport is distributed in a manner that benefits our players proportionately from one round to another,” said Brad Drewett, ATP Executive Chairman and President. “We have worked with tournament organisers over a number of weeks in order to get as close to the ATP prize money distribution rules as possible. We’re pleased to have reached a decision for 2013.

“The investment that Larry Ellison has made in the BNP Paribas Open in recent years has been tremendous for the sport. Tennis is fortunate to have the support of someone like Larry who is so passionate about the game. The BNP Paribas Open continues to cement its position as one of the most player and fan-friendly events on the ATP World Tour.”

The ATP also announced that it is continuing to review a new Tour-wide rule which will apply to tournaments wishing to deviate from ATP prize money breakdown rules in the future.

“The unique set of circumstances generated by the Indian Wells case has prompted us to seek to provide a permanent rule that will account for similar cases arising at ATP World Tour events in the future. For the long term benefit of both our players and tournaments, it’s important to establish a rule that can provide suitable parameters for similar requests to be processed in years ahead. We are always looking for ways to increase prize money for our players and continue to review a number of options in this area,” said Drewett.
