  • alignment of back foot

In Mitchells article on backhand grips, he states the importance in driving the one handed backhand, is learning to align your rear foot to the incoming ball. I am unclear about that alignment and the photo does not provide clues. Additional info would be useful.

    backfoot alignment

    Bpfaus,
The key to aligning your backfoot to the ball is to get your left foot (backhand) as close to the incoming ball as possible. If you let the ball go past you the backfoot would be anywhere from 6 to 12 inches from the ball. By getting this close to the ball with the rear foot if/when you do step in with the front foot it will be towards the cross court direction. For a down the line shot the backfoot will be a little further from the ball at the set up which will allow you, if you choose to, to step in the down the line direction with your front foot (right).
Another way to look at it is to draw an imaginery line in you minds-eye from the arch of you left foot to your target. Now place the ball along that alignment as you set up to it.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Kerry Mitchell.
