It's a shot that is not for everyone and I have a hard time myself swallowing pride and losing a once vice-like grip on the old school, fundamentally sound, morally appropriate classic volley, however as mentioned by other contributors to the forum, that takes time to master and therefore quick results are not seen.
The great thing about tennis is you can choose whatever shots you'd like to play and whatever style you'd like to choose from. Choice is yours. I hit the drive volley the vast majority of the time but it's always good to have a new wrinkle or tool in your game.
