  • Transition game

I have a major weakness in my tennis: the transition game.

If I am just standing at the net and volleying to someone at the baseline, it's not too bad. But when I am moving forward, my volleys go way off, and a lot of times I take really big swings. I tighten up because I lack confidence in this aspect of my game and I am not usually aggressive enough. I also don't always play the smartest approach shots.

I want to improve this part of my game because it will help me against pushers, grinders, and counterpunchers because I can put a way their floaters more easily. I can also follow more of my solid groundstrokes into the net and add another dimension to my game. And I can more effectively finish points off when I am on the offensive. Last but not least I can try to prevent serve and volleyers and net rushers from coming to the net by getting their first.

What can I do to improve my transition game as a whole? Any good drill ideas?

    Thanks!

Read 85% of don_budge's posts that reference the transition game. If you read them and absorb them, you'll get the picture.

Modification of your strokes aside, you have to have the mentality of wanting to come in. Applying pressure on your opponent and executing an approach shot not to hit a winner, but to hit an easier volley.

I commend your willingness to address your weaknesses. Your transition game is an important one. You bring up issues that many players have, in fact, too many in my opinion.

Before we can even address the volley, Let's approach shot. With the improved quality and execution of an approach, your volley will get better because of the ease of your opponents weaker reply. Hard to get to step 2 if step 1 is not ideal.

You have created numerous threads that ask many important questions about your game. And if you are actually taking these insights and suggestion in, then you have quite a bit of work to do. I worry about paralysis by analysis. But I guess I'm guilty of being an enabler. So here are some of the best articles from this site that may help you with your transition game...You've got some reading to do.
