  • Forehand Tip

A tennis instructor once suggested that the butt cap should be pulled forward when starting the forward motion to initiate a forehand. This is very helpful and is very evident in the videos!

Indeed this is one of the keys. It leads us to how the butt got itself into the position to pull forwards and then how exactly the pull is accomplished. The swing is indeed initiated with a pull and sometimes it is difficult for the student to see it that way.

I like to get them set up in the "Pancho Gonzalez" two handed grip to help the student engage their whole body in this pulling action. For a right hander this means to put two fingers and the thumb from the left hand on the bottom of the grip. In this manner you enable the student to engage the whole body from the feet to the shoulders and finally the arms in this pulling action.

Yes. And in a vague supplement to don_budge I'd add this: Hopefully the first forward motion is actually the torso rotating forward, leaving the racquet head tilted backward in lag. At that point the butt cap is is what comes forward if the hitting hand does. Inevitably.

Viewed another way, if upon first forward motion some other part of the racquet coming forward, then either the instructor has left out something important, or the student is in love and no lessons will help.
