    IMO, i find that teaching the volley with *any* backswing, to a beginner, almost always results in too big a backswing, and ultimately late contact.
    i prefer the (beginner) approach of pretending the racquet is like a butterfly net, and you just want to catch the ball on the strings "out in front", with zero backswing... and generae pace with their feet.
    i like using the net drill (in the article), to prevent the racquet from going back too far... but in general i like to exaggerate "no backswing" at first.
    once someone learns where the contact should be, and is used to much smaller window of time they have to react to a ball at the net, then they can experiement with varying backswing lengths (via the unit turn)

    i like the description of maintaining the hitting arm, then pushing through contact...
