  • 2020 Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC...ATP 500...Acapulco, Mexico

Once upon a time there was a legendary tennis player by the name of Don Budge. He had a nice winter teaching gig at the Princess Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. Don is no longer in the house. He is in the Big House where all deserving tennis champions go after they are gone from the earthly plane. Hopefully getting to "hit a few" with his peers and admirers. A beautiful human being...as well as a beautiful tennis player.

Rafael Nadal in the house. Let's see if he can avoid giving the tournament that peculiar smell that follows him around the circuit. Le Pew. Stan Wawrinka too. Stan won a tough one against Francis Tiafoe last night. Let's see...who else is in the house?

Look! None other than the biggest underachiever ever produced by the Aussie Tennis Federation. He has given them very little to be really proud of. Talk about stinking up the joint. He has made a habit of bad performances...sprinkled with the occasional brilliance. Felix Auger-Aliasimme has taken a detour from the European indoor circuit to swing by Acapulco. A tough switch from the indoors to sunny Acapulco. Let's see how he adapts. You know that in the Survival of the Fittest it is not the strongest or even the smartest that survives...it is the one who adapts the best.

With regard to survival and adaption this is a most brilliant explanation of why Rafael Nadal is on top of the heap more often than not. Besides his uncanny ability to compete...he has the uncanny ability to adapt. Particularly when it is hot sun and slow courts.

I am going out on a limb and declaring Rafael the favorite here.

Grigor had a huge win over Stan. His reward, now he plays Nadal.
