  • Tennis, the Corona Virus, and the Great Unknown

Let's get your thoughts on Matt Cronin's article, "Tennis, the Corona Virus, and the Great Unknown"

Wimbledon just got axed. Hopefully the US Open will still happen? My only real concern is it's shortening the time we have left to see Fed play. He's at the end of his career, and by cancelling all the Slams and moving the Olympics, his window just got shorter. I know in the end he's not going to be considered the GOAT, but in terms of who has brought me the most joy watching professional tennis, it's Roger by a long shot.

Ditto. Maybe all this rest will be good for Roger.

Not looking good for the slams this year. And if herd immunity is not achieved then maybe next year too. It's hard to imagine slams like the US Open and Wimbledon, which are packed to the rafters for two weeks of the year, could ever be allowed to happen without either a vaccine or herd immunity. The fastest a vaccine has ever been rubber stamped to use on the general public is 4 years.

I wonder whether playing behind closed might eventually be considered. It would at least keep players playing and fans entertained. It's a bummer not being able to watch any tennis when it was getting so interesting regarding the GOAT race.

Another thing I wonder about is if any of the tour players are getting to practice in this extended lay off? There is going to be a lot of rusty tour players if all they are doing is sitting on the sofa Tweeting and watching Netflix.

I still think Nick and Bernard are using this time to get to top level fitness.

Strange country America. You have by far the biggest economy and can outspend everyone else, yet you aren't offering anything like the social safety net to workers and businesses that we are here in the UK. It's like it's everyman for himself both in good times and in bad. God knows what your unemployment numbers are going to be if this goes on much longer.

Looks like playing behind closed doors will be considered now that it is dawning on people distancing could go on for a year or two.

My club reopened on 14 May. It's a right performance giving lessons. Hand gels, wiping rackets, no touching door or gate handles...the list goes on. No chance of catching COVID at my venue. The chances of catching COVID even without these measures would close to zero also. Outdoor tennis is the best sport for distancing and probably should never have been shut down in the first place.

Great to hear you're playing again Stotty. Was wondering if you had opened up. Up here in Scotland we're still waiting... Political manoeuvring from the SNP who want to look different, dare I say, independent, from Westminster government.

BTW, I make my own sanitizer spray from the WHO recipe in this link. It's about 80% alcohol, and disappears completely in about 20 seconds, no sticky residue, no smell. Better for tennis! And cheap.
No Purell? No problem! When disinfecting gel sells out everywhere, you can just make some yourself with stuff you (maybe) already have at home.

Interesting. Since I am making and growing everything myself since the lockdown (saving a fortune I might add), I might as well start making my own sanitiser.

It is an even stranger world. Galaxy. Universe. Particularly if science is your religion. Whatever happened to "climate change"? The last religion. It's on hold...the money is tied up in the virus. So Greta Thunberg has switched over to being a High Priestess for the new religion...COVIC-19. The corona virus. She has joined a panel of experts on CNN (Fake News Network) to expound on the new religion.

The word for the suns surface is corona. Influenza is a word conjured up in Italy. Italian 'scientists' examined sun-spot records and noticed that outbreaks always seemed to coincide with peaks of sun-spot activity. The word "INFLUENZA" became the name of an illness recognised in 1580. "Influenza" being short for "Influenza delle stelle" ... INFLUENCE OF THE STARS.

Tennis training went on as normal here in Sweden during the entirety of this "Pandemic".

"The Half-Science" (The Corona Virus)...Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

                        "The Devils"...Fyodor Dostoyevsky 1871

"Not one people, he began, as though readng it line by line and at the same time continuing to look menacingly at Stavrogin-not one people has yet ordered its life in accordance with the principles of science and reason. There has never been one instance of it, except only for a moment, out of folly. Socialism is by its very nature bound to be atheistic because it has proclaimed from the very first that it is an atheistic institution and that it intends to organize itself exclusively on the principles of science and reason. Reason and science have always, today and from the very beginning of time, played a secondary and a subordinate part; and so they will to the end of time. Peoples are formed and moved by quite a different force, a force that dominates and exercises its authority over them, the origin of which, however, is unknown and inexplicable. That force is the force of an unquenchable desire to go on to the end and, at the same time, to deny the existence of an end. It is the force of an incessant and persistent affirmation of its existence and a denial of death. It is the spirit of life, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water, the running dry of which is threatened in Revelation. It is the aesthetic principle, as the philosophers call it, an ethical principle, with which they identify it, the seeking of God, as I call it much more simply. The purpose of the whole evolution of a nation, in every people and at every period of its existence, is solely the pursuit of God, their God, their very own God, and faith in Him as in the only true one. God is the synthetic personality of the whole people, taken from its beginning to its end. It has never happened that all of many peoples should have one common God, but every people has always had its own special one. The first sign of the decay of nations is when they begin to have common gods. When gods begin to be common gods, the gods die as well as the faith in them, together with the peoples themselves. The more powerful a nation, the more individual its god. There has never yet been a nation without a religion, that is to say, without the conception of good and evil and its own good and evil. When the conceptions of good and evil become general among many nations, then these nations begin to die out, and the very distinction between good and evil begins to get blurred and to vanish. Reason has never been able to define good and evil, or even to separate good from evil, not even approximately; on the contrary, it had always mixed them up in a most pitiful and disgraceful fashion; as for science, its solutions have always been based on brute force. This was particularly true of the half-science, that most terrible scourge of mankind, worse than pestilence, famine, or war, and quite unknown till our present century. Half-science is a depot such as has never been known before. A despot that has its own priests and slaves, a despot before whom everybody prostrates himself with love and superstitious dread, such as has been quite inconceivable till now, before whom science itself trembles and surrenders in a shameful way."

I like the origin of "influenza".

Coincidentally, I heard the other day on Radio 4 that we are currently at the solar minimum for sunspot activity.

No? What else did Radio 4 have to say about any other unusual EMF activity? But yes...leave it to those 15th century Italians. Recognising the effect of electric magnetic frequency waves on the human health. But on the other hand wasn't Leonardo Da Vinci already around by then? Brilliant fellow. So Radio 4 broadcasts on what frequency? Maybe they were throwing us a knuckle...who knows? You know...fake right, go left.

While the industrious Italians were honing in on activity on the sun's surface (Corona) they probably were ignorant at that point about other sources of EMF. Never knew that someday we would have modern radio that was sort of introduced around 1920...while the Spanish "influenza" occurred in 1918 and 1919. Nor would they have any idea about other sources of radio (radioactive) waves floating around in the future of 2020.

I was reading more about the "corona virus" situation here in Sweden and also was curious as to when 5G was being implemented. The Swedes pride themselves on being on the cutting edge of phone technology...EMF. Lo and behold there were indications that it went live around November 2019...thereabouts. I "caught a cold" in mid-March and then my wife was coughing like a barking seal the next week. I remember actually having symptoms significantly earlier than coming down with it. Fortunately both of us are healthy as horses...and we dodged any complications from our maladies.

Florida is back up and fully running. beaches, restaurants, stores are all open. Percentage of people wearing masks is maybe 40%. All tennis clubs have reopened. Hoping the best for the rest of you.
