Carlos Alcaraz has a strong chance at passing Jannik Sinner during the US Open to return to the number one ranking. Even if Carlos doesn't catch Jannik during the fortnight he's likely to get a lot closer.
As the defending champ, Jannnik has 2,000 points to defend, while Carlos went out early last year, in R64 to Bottic van de Zandschulp (74), so anything better than that closes the ranking gap.
So far, I haven't seen any reliable reports of what health problem Sinner faced in retiring Monday. Will he recover? Will he be fit enough for 5 setters?
Tennis.com: Basically, Sinner needs to do one round better than Alcaraz at the US Open to keep No. 1. He also needs to reach at least the third round just to have a chance at hanging onto the top spot. If the two meet in the final, the winner will be No. 1.
UPDATE: Had Virus, Sinner to practice by Thursday. “I spoke to him briefly last night. He was feeling a bit better last night,” Cahill said on air. “He will take today off as well, that’s the plan, and hopefully get on the court [Thursday] and start hitting a few balls....We are confident he’s going to be fine.”

Coco Gauff splits with a coach and brings on Gavin MacMillan, a self-described biomechanics specialist who helped Aryna Sabalenka resurrect her serve.
Like Aryna, Coco has been suffering from a rash of double faults, most recently hitting 42 doubles in 3 matches in Montreal. She beat Danielle Collins despite double faulting away almost a set's worth of points, losing to teen Victoria Mboko in Canada, then hitting 16 doubles in losing the Cinci quarters to Jasmine Paolini.
Gauff has worked with Andy Roddick and "grip specialist" Daly.
A few months ago, Darren Cahill, wearing his TV announcer hat, said that 1) Coco collapses into the court "She needs to keep her left arm up and 2) "Her racket is facing the wrong way" on her take back. Cahill also said there is no quick fix. Coco needs to take weeks away from the tour to work on her serve.
NYT Paywall
Gauff's serve struggles have reemerged of late after a period of improvement with coach Matt Daly, who is now off her team.

Just saw her online, out in the rain practicing her service. With that dedication she can get there.Last edited by jimlosaltos; 08-20-2025, 03:18 PM.

Fans acting like animals out there. Once again, the rules are in place to stop this kind of behavior, but nowadays, no one really interested in accountability.Last edited by stroke; Today, 03:46 AM.

Medy exploits it. Tauson wilted against a crowd screaming during her every serve and for her every error. That part i don't like.
