Carlos Alcaraz has a strong chance at passing Jannik Sinner during the US Open to return to the number one ranking. Even if Carlos doesn't catch Jannik during the fortnight he's likely to get a lot closer.
As the defending champ, Jannnik has 2,000 points to defend, while Carlos went out early last year, in R64 to Bottic van de Zandschulp (74), so anything better than that closes the ranking gap.
So far, I haven't seen any reliable reports of what health problem Sinner faced in retiring Monday. Will he recover? Will he be fit enough for 5 setters?
Tennis.com: Basically, Sinner needs to do one round better than Alcaraz at the US Open to keep No. 1. He also needs to reach at least the third round just to have a chance at hanging onto the top spot. If the two meet in the final, the winner will be No. 1.
UPDATE: Had Virus, Sinner to practice by Thursday. “I spoke to him briefly last night. He was feeling a bit better last night,” Cahill said on air. “He will take today off as well, that’s the plan, and hopefully get on the court [Thursday] and start hitting a few balls....We are confident he’s going to be fine.”

Coco Gauff splits with a coach and brings on Gavin MacMillan, a self-described biomechanics specialist who helped Aryna Sabalenka resurrect her serve.
Like Aryna, Coco has been suffering from a rash of double faults, most recently hitting 42 doubles in 3 matches in Montreal. She beat Danielle Collins despite double faulting away almost a set's worth of points, losing to teen Victoria Mboko in Canada, then hitting 16 doubles in losing the Cinci quarters to Jasmine Paolini.
Gauff has worked with Andy Roddick and "grip specialist" Daly.
A few months ago, Darren Cahill, wearing his TV announcer hat, said that 1) Coco collapses into the court "She needs to keep her left arm up and 2) "Her racket is facing the wrong way" on her take back. Cahill also said there is no quick fix. Coco needs to take weeks away from the tour to work on her serve.
NYT Paywall
Gauff's serve struggles have reemerged of late after a period of improvement with coach Matt Daly, who is now off her team.

Medvedev’s US Open match descends into chaos after photographer enters court | CNN https://share.google/qdUNLeTMSMCg1E3Rq
Fans acting like animals out there. Once again, the rules are in place to stop this kind of behavior, but nowadays, no one really interested in accountability.Last edited by stroke; 08-25-2025, 03:46 AM.

Medy exploits it. Tauson wilted against a crowd screaming during her every serve and for her every error. That part i don't like.

Simon Chambers on ESPN about how Wim Fissete's coaching helped Iga improve.
"Fissete, who has won majors with Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Angelique Kerber and Naomi Osaka, was hired by Swiatek at the end of last year. Since then, he has played an integral role in her resurgence, focusing on a couple of minor technical adjustments.
""We made a little change in the footwork, in general, for faster surfaces," Fissette told a small group of reporters at Wimbledon. "It was funny because I showed her, and then she tried, but was not convinced. Then she asked me to show her some videos but she said, show me realistic videos, not like [Novak] Djokovic or [Carlos] Alcaraz.
"I said to her, you have been the game-changer in footwork, so if you want to go again to the next level, it's better to look at Djokovic or Alcaraz or [Jannik] Sinner as an example. So we kind of did that. And let's say she was more convinced after that."
Wim also talks about struggling to figure out how to communicate with Iga. She'd always worked with fellow Poles as coaches, and they had specific words she responded to/ understood.

Iga and Jannik combined for three (3) breadsticks and two (2) "Half Preztels" { if you're in the camp that accepts that slang for 2, personally I think half-pretzel should be a "3" ]
Meanwhile, Musetti and Gio Pericard continue their apparent quest to meet in every event the two enter with the Italian again winning, this time in four.
Here's an oddity: Musetti and Gio both hit 13 aces, but Musetti got two (2) aces on second serves.
Somewhere somebody had that prop bet and cashed in.

Carlos' new haricut is all the "buzz". Streamlining might make him even faster?
Blames brother mishandling new razor.
Venus playing doubles. Cries at presser saying she had never felt crowd support like what she received in her singles match.

Djokovic is indeed having to "play himself into tournament shape" after the long lay off. At what cost remains to be seen.
Update: I leave for a while and it appears Djokovic returned to the mean, winning the second set. Still, 5 ft 9 in unseeded player has more aces - against Djokovic -- and more winners.Last edited by jimlosaltos; 08-27-2025, 09:33 AM.
