  • No I haven't looked at the differences with his serve. He needs to play some matches on the stadiums at the tournaments where we film...

Thanks for the good words on the series...

    • Hey John,

Hope you're well. Just wondering if there will be any further updates on the ATP forehand coming up from Rick or Brian or is that finished with?

      Jonny.

      • That's all for right now. I will see them both at the USPTA in Orlando this fall so you never know.

        • Reading Opponents'

Suggestion: I'd like to see a good article about reading opponents' behavior to anticipate their shots -- something I've seen very little on.

Jay Berger's piece for you is helpful:

But I suspect there is a lot more to this both in reading and reacting.

I'm writing this while watching a match from Hamburg as Lopez hits a forehand sitter from the service line and Florian Mayer simply glides over to it, no problem. How the heck did he cover that so easily?

Sidebar: I remember years back a pro out of San Diego (Brady? Name escapes me) did a study tracking players' eyes with a laser system to actually measure what they looked at. One player was looking at the trees behind the court when his opponent swung at passing shots, yet he covered them. When asked, the player said that as soon as his opponent took his racket back he knew if it was going down line <g>.

Can you help me get to that point, John ?

          • I have been wanting to do an article on this with Scott Ford. You can search him he is in Colorado--has a whole theory about how the eyes work, etc.

That sounds like an excellent idea. Would love to see an article on something like that. I was at the semi-finals of Roland Garros this year and Nadal and Djokovic were moving nearly before they hit the ball. Like Djokovic nearly overran a Nadal forehand at one stage. It's pretty surreal.

                    John,

Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to attend our USPTA World Conference in Orlando. I'll be there as well doing some testing and certification work for new members. Looking forward to your presentation.

                    • backswing size

                      John

I was reading one of the archived articles on forehand backswings.

                      A question:

To determine backswing size, wouldn't tracing the distance the racket head travels be the most accurate way of doing this? Is it not possible to do this without 3D?

It's an excellent article by the way.

                      • Kyle,

                        Yeah let's meet!

                        Stotty,

Well Brian kind of made that analysis obsolete from a coaching perspective...it would still be very interesting to know the actual distances not to mention speed but I think 3D would be required.

                        • Regarding ATP Backhand Discussion...

                          John,
Loved seeing the ongoing Macci offerings this month, look forward to his future installments. My question to you is: Will Brian Gordon continue with his detailed/biomechanical articles along with what Rick is posting in his video's? I really enjoyed the deeper insight that his approach brought, and hope he is going to continue to lay that out for us. Rick's interpretation of it is great, don't get me wrong, but Brian's work builds the story at a whole "nuther level!!!!

Also, loved seeing TennisPlayer's new ads, though wondered about the shortage of good looking spokes persons....I looked to see if there was a local strike that kept them away, or a modeling convention that might have them all tied up at the time of filming...cuz we just got some dude talking bout this free month being given away! lol

Let's face it...after having Danielle Dotzenrod do the ads it can only go down from there. JY does a nice job, never a bad thing having the founder of the company speak. But yeah, he's no Danielle

Hey I watched Danielle making tequila drinks in a bikini at our house in Indian Wells when she stayed with us so you don't have to tell me who is prettier.

And yes Brian's two-handed work is coming up. Decided to do it in reverse order this time.

Nice John! And therein lies my question I had for you at the World Conference next month? Is she single? Do I have a chance with her?
