Games and Exercises to Develop Drop Shots and Feel

Chris Lewit

In articles one (Click Here) and two (Click Here) we explored the details and technique of the forehand and backhand drop shots. In these last 2 installments, I will share with you some of my favorite games and exercises to develop better drop shots and continental grip feel.

These mini tennis games can be used any time in practice, but they make especially good warm up or warm down games. They can be a fun way to develop feel at the beginning or the end of practices.

I hope you enjoyed this series about the drop shot and find these exercises useful. Now go out and practice! Carlos Alcaraz famously practiced his drop shot and strokes against a wall as a kid while growing up in Murcia. If you don’t have a partner available, hitting against a wall is a great way to practice your drop shots! Vamos!

Exercises and Games

Construction Cone Drop Shot Game

I created this game to develop drop shot feel. Players get one point for hitting the other players cone. Games to 3, 5, or 7 points.

Bounce Down Mini Tennis Game

Watch Djokovic play this game on Instagram! A challenging continental grip game.

Bucket Drop Shot Game

The players must sink the ball in the bucket to score a point. Alternatively, one point can be awarded for hitting the bucket and two points for sinking the ball within the bucket.
